Acrylic Landscape Painting

Four weeks aspiring to one finished acrylic painting of either:

Tuesdays, 10am to 12pm, April 9, 16, 23 & 30, 2024:

West Coast Waterways: Clear fresh water running over rocks and splashing into pools, fallen logs and fern reaching for the water. How does an artist paint rocks with water moving over them? Learn some basic techniques of creating movement, depth and perspective in waterway landscapes that reflect our west coast vibe.

Over four weeks we will work step by step on thumbnail sketching to create a painting plan, preparing the canvas, laying out our sketch plan, applying paint – including colour blocking techniques and finishing touches.

West Coast Mountains: Tall cumulonimbus clouds stacking up against the coastal mountains, dwarfing life as we know it in the valley. Learn some basic techniques of editing the content, creating movement, depth and perspective in mountain landscapes that reflect our Fraser Valley vibe.

West Coast Sky Scape: A V-shaped front coming in from the Pacific, and the colour of the sunset breaking through in the cloud gaps over your favourite beach. How does an artist paint a sunset that looks believable? Learn some basic techniques of creating interest with complimentary colour, colour-blocking techniques, and atmosphere and perspective in sky landscapes that reflect our west coast vibe.

West Coast Rainforest:
Tall trees make moody shadows with bright light peeking through – how does an artist edit and interpret these west coast spaces. Learn some basic techniques of creating atmosphere, depth and perspective in forest landscapes that reflect our west coast vibe.

West Coast Wild Beaches: Paint the misty foreshore of a west coast beach where waves crash against forested shorelines and the wild is tangible. Learn some basic techniques of creating movement, rhythm, atmosphere, and perspective in seascapes that reflect our west coast vibe.

Buy our Special Art Kit for these classes, or bring:
Sketch book and 1 HB and 1 HB2 pencils, eraser. 1 white chalk and small misting bottle ($$ store)

Palette - can be a plastic takeout box with lid – flat bottom

canvas board 11 x 14” to max 16 x 20”

professional quality (or best you can afford) acrylic heavy body paint – ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, titanium white, burnt umber, cerulean/ brilliant blue. This is the minimum.

I will teach you to mix greens and a black.

Brushes: ½” filbert, 1” flat - wash (look at watercolour brushes), 1/4'” angle, ½” flat, No.2 round for

signature and fine details

Four weeks Four Techniques: A good place to start.

Build your confidence with ‘bit size’ step by step exercises that will enable you to eventually take on a whole painting. Each week we will learn a painting technique for either:

clouds

atmospheric skies

water still and moving

trees distilling shapes and interpreting branches and leaves
